My Karoo
Write Your Own Story of the Karoo - and Win a Great Prize!
If you've ever travelled through the Karoo, chances are you have a story to tell. Something about a small town you passed through, an encounter with someone on the road, an unplanned adventure or, simply, ten minutes spent at sunset on the side of the road, watching an old Aermotor windmill creaking water out of the depths of the Earth.
We at Karoo Space want to see those stories from you. Write a piece ranging in length from 300 to 500 words, e-mail it to us at info@karoospace and we will select entries for publication on this site. We will give your story a professional edit and, where possible, illustrate it with photographs from our extensive image bank. The story will have headlines, blurbs, captions and, most importantly, your name will appear on the header. And then you will be part of the Karoo Space family of story-tellers.
When the first 30 entries are in, the winner will be chosen and the winning My Karoo story writer will be offered a fabulous weekend for two at Die Tuishuise in Cradock - a prize worth more than R2 000.
Send us your story - and try to keep the tone of your article celebratory. We reserve the right to edit you if we feel you're using this space as a bitching post.
Travelling Light (?)
By Jill Lieberman
We’d always travel through the Karoo when my children were young on our yearly pilgrimage to the Cape. We’d load up our mini-bus with all the essentials needed to see us through the long journey from Johannesburg to our seaside destination.
A Walk in the Country
By Guy Lieberman
In the 90’s I used to regularly travel by car between Jo’burg and Cape Town. I was in my early twenties, had time on my hands, and chose to make a journey of these self-imposed domestic migrations. Sometimes I would take five days to amble through the Karoo, staying at remote guesthouses in villages, way off the arterial roads, or on hidden farms that I doubt I would ever be able to find again. I fell in love with the Karoo then, and little has changed – except the available time to travel in such an unhurried fashion.
